Mergui Archipelago – The Most Exclusive Diving in Southeast Asia

Off limits for decades, Myanmar’s remote Mergui Archipelago is one of Asia’s most mysterious and least-dived marine regions. Scattered across the northern Andaman Sea, this chain of over 800 islands offers pristine reefs, dramatic pinnacles, caves, and swim-throughs. With minimal tourism and virtually untouched ecosystems, it’s the ultimate destination for adventurous divers seeking both big-animal encounters and intricate macro life.

Beneath the surface, dramatic topography, thriving hard corals, and nutrient-rich waters create the perfect stage for big-animal encounters. Mantas glide through open blue channels, eagle rays sweep along pinnacles, and vibrant reef life fills every crevice. With unpredictable currents and dynamic conditions, every dive feels like true exploration—never scripted, never the same twice.

This expedition is all about discovery: remote islands, raw beauty, and unforgettable underwater moments you simply cannot replicate anywhere else in Southeast Asia.

Rare Access: Very few divers ever visit this closed-off frontier.

Untouched Reefs: Thriving corals, dense fish life, and minimal human impact.

Big Animal Potential: Oceanic mantas, eagle rays, jacks, barracuda, and occasional sharks.

Macro Heaven: Ghost pipefish, seahorses, nudibranchs, mantis shrimp, and other hidden critters.

No Inland Red Tape: Full sea-based expedition, plus a Myanmar passport stamp—a rare bragging right.

Ideal For: Adventurous divers seeking frontier-style diving, dramatic underwater landscapes, and a mix of macro and big-animal encounters in a truly remote destination.

The Diving

Diving the Mergui Archipelago is unlike anywhere else in Southeast Asia. Its isolation has preserved entire ecosystems from heavy tourism and fishing pressure, leaving reefs that feel raw, wild, and startlingly alive. Nutrient-rich currents sweep through deep channels and around towering pinnacles, drawing in pelagics while allowing hard corals to thrive in dense, healthy formations.

What We Can Typically See

While conditions vary, the Mergui Archipelago consistently delivers a remarkable mix of wide-angle and macro life:

  • Pelagics: manta rays, eagle rays, schooling barracuda and jacks, occasional reef sharks

  • Reef life: colorful hard corals, soft corals, sponges, and gorgonian fans

  • Macro: ghost pipefish, seahorses, nudibranchs, mantis shrimp, and other hidden treasures

  • Big blue surprises: whale sharks, massive stingrays, or unexpected encounters with large pelagics

Type of Diving & Expectations

  • Conditions can be dynamic: moderate to strong currents are common

  • Visibility varies but often exceeds 30 meters at peak conditions

  • Ideal for divers comfortable in varied conditions who enjoy exploration and discovery

  • Expedition-style diving: plans adjust daily depending on currents, weather, and wildlife sightings

Cultural Encounter: The Moken Community

We’ll also have the rare opportunity to visit an island and meet the Moken community, the indigenous “Sea Gypsies” of the region. Historically nomadic seafarers traversing the North Andaman Sea, small groups later settled on islands in the Mergui Archipelago and Surin National Park.

Today, they maintain a traditional hunter-gatherer lifestyle, living in harmony with their environment. Visiting them offers a unique cultural insight into a people who deeply respect the ocean and its resources—an unforgettable complement to the expedition.

The Thailand Master

We’ll be calling the Thailand Master home throughout the expedition—an intimate, expedition-style liveaboard designed for remote diving. With space for just 18 divers, a spacious dive deck, and relaxed communal areas, the boat offers a comfortable, social atmosphere that’s perfect for long days of diving and sharing stories between dives. An experienced crew and fresh, locally inspired meals round out the experience, allowing you to focus entirely on what matters most: incredible diving in one of the most exclusive regions in Southeast Asia.
