We just returned from our first group trip of 2026 to Dominica — and coming home right before a snowstorm shut everything down felt especially cruel.
Dominica welcomed us with lush rainforest, warm water, adventure at every turn, and the kind of travel experience that reminds you why you do this in the first place. It has a way of slowing you down — in the best possible way — inviting you to reconnect with nature, with each other, and with the adventure itself.
Diving Highlights
The diving in Dominica impressed us in all the right ways.
We found healthy reefs filled with sponges of every shape, size, and color, along with beautiful sea fans and thriving coral growth. The variety of dive sites kept things interesting all week — we dove near a pier, explored wall dives, cruised coral gardens, and swam through volcanic formations and swim-throughs.
Conditions were generally calm with very little current since we were diving on the protected Caribbean side of the island.
And the marine life? A little bit of everything.
We saw: sharks, turtles, eels, seahorses and frogfish, and even eagle rays and a manta ray! Many of the sites felt like nurseries, which is always a great sign of a healthy ecosystem.
Topside Highlights: Where Dominica Really Shines
We packed the schedule, and yet Dominica still left us wanting more — there’s simply so much to experience. The island is just as special above the water as it is below, with activities that appeal to divers and non-divers alike.
Whale Watching
We successfully spotted sperm whales, which migrate to Dominica each winter to calf. Seeing them in their natural habitat was unforgettable and added a whole new layer of appreciation for this destination.
River Tubing
This one surprised us. We expected a lazy river float… until our briefing warned us we might encounter rapids 😅
Equipped with a helmet, lifejacket, and a very small paddle, we set off — nervous smiles quickly turning into laughter. The experience bonded us as a group and ended up being one of the biggest highlights of the trip.
Titou Gorge
An adventure in itself. Swimming through the gorge was stunning — though the water was definitely “refreshing” (which means cold). Beautiful, invigorating, and worth it.
Trafalgar Falls
A short hike led us to a scenic viewpoint overlooking the iconic twin falls — an easy and rewarding stop.
Hot Springs
A must-do in Dominica. After a full week of diving and adventure, soaking in the hot springs felt very well deserved.
A few fun (and useful) takeaways:
-
Dominica is very much a lunch culture — many places are open mid-day but not for dinner
-
They drive on the left side of the road (British influence), and the roads are narrow and windy — exciting and sometimes stressful rides
-
USD is accepted, but the local currency is the East Caribbean Dollar
-
Weather can change quickly once you leave the coast
-
There are rainbows everywhere
-
Rum punch is strong… very strong 🍹
Would We Go Back?
Beyond the diving and activities, what really stood out was how restorative the experience felt. Dominica isn’t about rushing from one highlight to the next — it’s about being present, breathing it in, and letting the island set the pace.
The island is beautiful, the diving offered excellent marine variety, and the topside adventures added so much depth to the experience. It’s a fantastic destination for divers and non-divers alike, especially for those who love nature, adventure, and off-the-beaten-path travel.

Looking Ahead: St. Lucia
If Dominica speaks to you, join us in St. Lucia later this year. It offers a similar island vibe and is just a short distance away. We recommend this trip if you’re looking for a thoughtfully planned, off-the-beaten-path experience — with beautiful diving, stunning views, delicious food, and warm hospitality.
