We just got back from our Oktoberfest scouting adventure, and wow… this experience was every bit as epic as we imagined. From giant beer steins to storybook castles, from lively tents to charming Bavarian towns, this trip has everything you could want in a fall adventure — and more. If you join us next year, you’re in for a treat! 🍻
A Little History: Why Oktoberfest is Legendary
Oktoberfest started in 1810 to celebrate the marriage of Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen. Today, it’s the world’s largest beer festival, drawing millions of visitors each fall. But it’s more than just beer — it’s a celebration of Bavarian culture, food, music, and tradition. And trust us, being in the middle of it is something you’ll never forget.
Dressing the Part: Finding Trachten
No Oktoberfest experience is complete without traditional attire, and let’s just say… we had fun!
I (Adreon) ended up with a dirndl — and yes, it’s as cute as it sounds. Bonus: you can swap the blouse or apron for a completely different look. I had a backup from Amazon, but buying a dirndl and apron in Germany felt way more authentic (and less “costume-y”).
Corey got a traditional shirt and vest, and he’s working on authentic lederhosen. Pro tip: if you buy online, it won’t fit right — real Bavarian leather stretches perfectly to you.
Favorite Foods & Beers (Yes, Breakfast with Beer is Acceptable!)
Oktoberfest is a paradise for food and drink lovers. Highlights for us:
- Giant soft pretzels (a classic, obviously)
- Roasted chicken and pork dishes
- Traditional sausages (like Weisswurst)
- Käsespätzle
- Schnitzel
- And so many more!
And the beer? Not your average brew. Oktoberfest beer is governed by strict purity rules (the Reinheitsgebot), and it tends to have a higher alcohol content than most beers. Let’s just say we learned that the hard way… but honestly, it was so worth it! 🍺
Whether you’re pairing your meal with beer, wine, or other beverages, the flavors are unmatched — and yes, it’s totally acceptable to enjoy them with breakfast.
Tent Tales: Where the Magic Happens
The heart of Oktoberfest is found inside its massive beer tents — each one run by one of Munich’s historic breweries. But these aren’t just “tents” in the casual sense. They’re enormous, elaborately decorated halls that can hold thousands of people, each with its own personality, menu, and music. Some feel like cozy Alpine lodges, others like lively concert venues with brass bands and dancing on benches.
What makes them so unique is the atmosphere — imagine thousands of people from around the world singing together, steins clinking, and delicious Bavarian dishes being served family-style. Getting into these tents, especially the most popular ones, is notoriously difficult without a reservation. That’s why having insider access and reserved seating is a game-changer — it guarantees you a seat, a stein, and a front-row spot in the fun.
Our Favorite Oktoberfest Tents 🎪🍺
Käfer Wiesn-Schänke – Iconic and cozy, this tent is like a Bavarian log cabin with rustic décor, flowers, and antiques. We even spotted a few celebrities — it’s a must-see (and its our #1 goal to get this tent for our trips next year!)
Stiftl Schutzenlisl – WOW! The live band had everyone singing and dancing. We felt like part of the family in this tent.
Armbrustschützenzelt – A shorter visit, but still a fun spot with a lively atmosphere.
