Scuba Diving Statia: Reefs, Wrecks, and Unexpected Surprises

Scuba Diving Statia and exploring history.

Another Global Adventures for Scuba Divers trip is in the books, and what a week it was!

During the last week of May, our group of adventurous divers gathered on the tiny Dutch Caribbean island of St. Eustatius—better known simply as Statia—for a week filled with great diving, fascinating history, and plenty of memorable moments both above and below the water.

While Statia may not be as well-known as some Caribbean destinations, that’s part of its appeal. With healthy reefs, historic wrecks, volcanic landscapes, and a rich history that stretches back centuries, this quiet island offers far more than most visitors expect.

A Caribbean Island at Its Own Pace

One of the things we appreciated most about Statia was what wasn’t there.

No crowds. No high-rise hotels. And perhaps best of all, no cruise ships.

In a region where many islands welcome thousands of cruise passengers each day, Statia has maintained a refreshingly authentic and relaxed atmosphere. With fewer than 4,000 residents and no bustling tourist districts, the island moves at its own pace.

That slower rhythm quickly became one of our favorite parts of the experience. Whether enjoying a quiet evening overlooking the sea, exploring Oranjestad’s historic streets, or simply watching the sunset after a day of diving, Statia offered something increasingly rare in today’s world: the opportunity to slow down and truly disconnect.

Our Home Away from Home: Golden Rock Resort

Our group spent the week at the beautiful Golden Rock Resort, whose stunning grounds and spectacular views of the Caribbean Sea and the Quill volcano provided the perfect setting for relaxing between dives.

Comfortable accommodations, excellent food, and breathtaking scenery made it easy to settle into island life and enjoy the slower pace that makes Statia so special.

Each day, we headed out with the team at Statia Divers. Their professionalism, local knowledge, and passion for the marine park helped make the week such a success. From smooth operations to thoughtful dive briefings, the crew consistently delivered a fantastic experience.

Healthy Reefs, Historic Wrecks, and Plenty of Life

Statia’s marine park offers an impressive variety of dive sites, ranging from volcanic reefs to historical wrecks that tell the story of the island’s maritime past. Excellent visibility and abundant marine life ensured that every dive offered something new to discover.

Sea turtles made regular appearances throughout the week, often cruising effortlessly across the reef while photographers scrambled to capture the moment. Arrow crabs hid in nearly every crevice, rewarding those who slowed down to look closely.

We were also lucky enough to encounter reef sharks patrolling the reef, along with large southern stingrays resting in the sand. A highlight of the week was a graceful eagle ray—one of those moments where everyone pauses to watch it glide by.

And then there were the squirrelfish.

By the end of the trip, it had become something of a running joke. They were everywhere—under ledges, around wrecks, and tucked among the reef. Nobody expected to come home with quite so many squirrelfish photos, but we certainly weren’t complaining.

Underwater Highlights from Statia

More Than Just Diving

One of the things we love most about group travel is discovering that the experience extends far beyond the dives themselves.

Hiking into the Quill

One of the highlights above water was hiking into the crater of the Quill, Statia’s dormant volcano. Descending into the lush crater felt like stepping into another world, surrounded by tropical vegetation and towering walls formed by ancient volcanic activity.

The climb back out certainly provided some exercise, but the experience—and the views—made every step worthwhile.

Exploring the Golden Rock

Despite its small size, Statia has played an outsized role in history.

During the 18th century, the island became one of the busiest trading ports in the Caribbean and earned the nickname “The Golden Rock.” Ships from around the world passed through its harbor, making the island one of the wealthiest and most strategically important locations in the region.

The Best Part: The People

As always, the best part of any trip wasn’t the turtles, the wrecks, or even the views from the Quill.

It was the people.

One of the greatest joys of leading group trips is watching strangers become friends. Between dive briefings, dinners, stories shared after each day’s adventures, and plenty of laughter along the way, memories were made both above and below the water.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for Secret Statia 2026. Corey and I are grateful you trusted us with your vacation, and we loved sharing this hidden gem with such a wonderful group.

Until the Next Adventure

Statia may be small, but it offers far more than its size would suggest. From healthy reefs and fascinating wrecks to volcanic hikes, centuries of history, and a wonderfully relaxed, cruise-ship-free atmosphere, this quiet Caribbean island proved once again why it remains one of our favorite hidden gems.

If you’re thinking about visiting St. Eustatius yourself, we’ve put together a complete St. Eustatius (Statia) diving and destination guide covering where to stay, how to get there, dive conditions, and what to expect.

While we don’t currently have another Secret Statia adventure on the calendar, we’d love to hear from you if a trip like this sounds appealing. Some of our favorite destinations begin with a conversation and enough interest from fellow divers looking for something a little different.

If the combination of great diving, rich culture, and authentic experiences speaks to you, we have a few upcoming adventures with a similar spirit:
